Rostrum Records CEO Benjy Grinberg recently discussed the independent success of Mac Miller’s new album Blue Slide Park, which is currently the #1 album in the country.
Blue Slide Park is the first independent release to reach #1 on the national sales charts in over 15 years.
The last time such a feat occurred was in 1998, when the Dogg Pound hit the top with their debut album Dogg Food.
Mac Miller’s rise to the top of the charts is significant, because over 76% of his sales were comprised of digital copies.
The digital version of the album was distributed by INgrooves, while Fontana Distribution handled the release’s shipments to physical retailers.
“We wanted to release this album independently and on our own terms,” Benjy Grinberg, President of Rostrum Records told AllHipHop.com in a statement. “INgrooves and Fontana have been great partners for Rostrum on this project, and the current success of Blue Slide Park is a true testament that it’s possible for us to compete as an independent on a grander scale.”
Rostrum formulated a strategy with INgrooves and Fontana to capitalize on Mac Miller’s Internet presence.
Mac Miller has over 1 million Twitter followers, while his YouTube videos are approaching an aggregate total of 100 million views.
Those numbers, along with constant touring, helped the Pittsburgh native move a whopping 144,487 copies in the first week.
“This is a big moment for the independent music community,” said Dave Zierler, EVP & General Manager, INgrooves. “Rostrum and Mac are proof that a digitally-focused independent effort works in today’s dynamic music marketplace, by engaging fans directly and maximizing availability to all consumers via our global online retail network.”
For Fontana, the album’s success proof that traditional record labels and independents can maximize their distribution power by developing distribution strategies for all mediums.

(AllHipHop News) NBA legend Magic Johnson is planning to tackle the issue of homophobia and HIV/AIDS within the Hip-Hop community.
Magic recently marked the 20th anniversary of his announcement that he was HIV positive, along with his retirement from the NBA, which occurred in 1991.
Magic is planning on creating a coalition that will engage rappers to speak out against homophobia and discrimination against gays.
But the main focus of the coalition will be to raise the level of awareness and to break down the stereotypes
“What we’re trying to do is reach out to the Hip-Hop community because they have power — power with their voice, power with that mic in their hand and power with the lyrics that they sing,” Magic Johnson told The Huffington Post.
Magic said that he was closely associated with a number of top artists and executives within the Hip-Hop community and those individuals are involved in the early stages of the new organization.
Magic refused to reveal the names of the artists, but he confirmed that “five or six” stars are aligning with the new initiative.
Magic is planning to utilize the collective fan bases of the rap stars to help spread a positive message.
“We’re going to come out next year with everybody and we’ll have a nice big press conference and what we’re going to do, what our plan is, because it’s so important that we rally — not just them, either,” Magic said. “I need the Hip-Hop community but I also need the basketball players and football players. We need a little bit of everybody, so that’s what we’re working on now.”
Rick Ross was hit with a lawsuit over cutting his live show short after only 15-minutes.
From no-show’s to impostors, some Hip Hop artists are notorious for their lacking live performances. Now, it appears that Rick Ross has been hit with a lawsuit for turning in a paltry 15-minute performance.
According to AllHipHop, the MMG impresario was recently slammed with a $226,000 lawsuit over a less-than-satisfactory performance. SM Global Union agreed to pay Ross $90,000 for an hour long set, but the Miami rapper walked off stage after only 15-minutes.
Ross isn’t the only emcee named in the lawsuit, however. SM Global Union is also suing tour-matesMeek Mill and Waka Flocka Flames for breach of contract after both failed to promote the event on Facebook and Twitter as contractually stipulated.
This isn’t the first time the Bawse has been sued for the quality of his live show; last year, Nigeria’s Cross River State sued him after he bailed on its Calabar Festival. DX will keep you updated as more information comes to light.

In the music industry, the 4th Quarter is a typically a big one, with albums arriving just in time for Christmas. We expected to have a lot more this season, but now even more albums have moved around. A$AP Rocky was supposed to deliver LongLiveA$AP last month, and that was moved to some time in 2013. We do learn though that he has completed the project, so at least that much is for certain. Lil Wayne was supposed to be delivering I Am Not a Human Being II this month, but that’s been moved to 2013. Talib Kweli was also supposed to come through with Prisoner Of Consciousness, but now that’s been bumped. There is good news though. J. Cole is dropping his follow-up album Born Sinner in January 28th. Let’s hope that one doesn’t get moved around as well.

Sheek Louch reveals Swizz Beatz and DJ Khaled will executive produce their long awaited third LP.
Fans of the L.O.X. have been patiently waiting for over decade for new material from the group, but they may soon have a reason to rejoice. Now, in a recent interview with MTV, one-third of the trio Sheek Louch gives some info on the Yonkers crew’s long awaited release.
Sheek revealed that Styles P, Jadakiss and he have tapped DJ Khaled and Ruff Ryders partner Swizz Beatz to executive produce their upcoming effort. Although he made no mention of whether the trio has found a new label home, Sheek added that both Diddy and Lil Waynehave tried to sign them.
“The last meeting I had was with Swizz and Khaled and they’re executive producing this new L.O.X. album,” he explained. “So far, we’ve got like 12 bangers of big, big records. I was just in the studio the other night with us and Alicia Keys working on the Lox project and get ready y’all. Get ready y’all, I’m sorry for the delay and the wait, but this joint is gonna be monstrous, man.”
He added, “Lil Wayne tried to sign us, Puff tried to re-sign us and paint that picture over, we done been in motherfuckers’ living rooms and talkin’ business. The meeting we just had with Swizz and Khaled about executive producing this project was the one that grabbed us and we’re gonna give y’all some real, real big records.”
