Beyonce Slammed For Using NASA Challenger Explosion Audio In ‘XO’

Former NASA employees and NASA families have slammed Beyonce for sampling audio from the space shuttle Challenger explosion on her new song “XO.”

“Flight controllers here looking very carefully at the situation. Obviously a major malfunction,” former NASA public affairs officer Steve Nesbitt can be heard sayingin the first six seconds of “XO.” The communication is from a broadcast of the Mission Control Center in Houston after the Challenger exploded following takeoff on Jan. 28, 1986. The tragedy left all seven crew members dead.

NASA officials, under the condition of anonymity, expressed dismay to ABC News over Beyonce’s choice of sampling. June Scobee Rodgers, the widow of Challenger Space Shuttle Commander Dick Scobee, told ABC she’s “disappointed” and described the clip included in the song as “an emotionally difficult one.”

Former NASA employee Keith Cowing and the man behind wants Beyonce to remove the NASA audio altogether. He called it “inappropriate in the extreme” and compared it to using soundbites from Sept. 11 or the assassination of President John F. Kennedy.

“Having this audio included in such a song serves to mock the severity of the events and loss that these final words represent,” he wrote on his website. “If this was done with full knowledge of the origin of these words then this is simply repugnant. If this was done without due diligence as to the source of the words being sampled, then this is ignorance. Either way Beyoncé owes the families of the crew of Challenger an apology.”

Beyonce responded in a statement to ABC:

My heart goes out to the families of those lost in the Challenger disaster. The song ‘XO’ was recorded with the sincerest intention to help heal those who have lost loved ones and to remind us that unexpected things happen, so love and appreciate every minute that you have with those who mean the most to you. The songwriters included the audio in tribute to the unselfish work of the Challenger crew with hope that they will never be forgotten.

“XO” is about a troubled relationship, The Hollywood Reporter noted.

Beyonce’s rep could not be reached for further comment.

Karrueche Tran Says People Won’t Understand Unconditional Love for Chris Brown

For as long as she’s been in a relationship with Chris BrownKarrueche Tran has been fielding a lot of comments from critics who think she’s insane for forgiving him time after time. Not only was he under fire for hitting Rihanna in 2009, but he’s left Tran for the singer multiple times only to come running back to the model’s arms when things went sour with RiRi. In a recent interview with BlogXilla, Tran opened up about her relationship with Breezy and why no one will understand the unconditional love she has for him.

“It’s different,” she explained. “And it’s something that a lot of people won’t and will never understand, which is why I get so much flack and hate because you know looking from the outside in it looks messy. Nobody knows the real story, nobody knows what I went through.”

Still, that negative feedback keeps her from being an open book on social media and she admits to keeping certain thoughts to herself so that the public doesn’t jump to conclusions.

“Sometimes I hold back from tweeting certain things. Sometimes you’re emotional and you want to tweet a lyric or whatever it may be, I can’t do that because if I do it’s ‘oh this means this and that she must be going through this…’ It’s like what the hell,” she said.

There’s no denying that her relationship has thrown Tran into the spotlight and the public has seen her as fair game when it comes to criticizing her decisions without even knowing her. But she says that she’s used the situation to find herself and find strength despite the hate she receives.

“I’ve discovered myself a little more, personality wise just being put through certain situations, whether being in the spotlight, heartbreak, friends coming and going, family. I’ve grown and I’ve matured and I kind of like that. Even going back to the haters, it’s messed up what they say but that’s made me stronger and it’s built me into who I am today and I am completely fine with that.” always gives you the latest fashion and beauty trends, tips and news. Kanye West The Subject Of Textbook Regarding His “Cultural Impact”

Kanye West The Subject Of Textbook Regarding His "Cultural Impact"

Kanye West is the subject of “The Cultural Impact Of Kanye West,” an academic textbook by Julius Bailey, due March 2014.

March 6 will see the release of The Cultural Impact of Kanye West, an over 300-page examination of the Kanye West and his impact on music and culture.

The description of author Julius Bailey’s unofficial academic textbook says it’s an in-depth analysis of the “moral and social implications of West’s words, images and music in the broader context of Western civilization’s preconceived ideas.”

Bailey has been an ambassador for Hip Hop’s purge of academia in the past. He’s been the editor of a collection of essays on Jay Z’s impact in music culture and has written a book on the fusion of Hip Hop and Philosophy. Julius Bailey is also a professor of philosophy at Wittenberg University and a leading voice in Hip Hop pedagogy.

This is not the first time Hip Hop has entered the halls of academia. Numerous universities across the United States have included Hip Hop as a discourse for learning. More notable examples include 9th Wonder’s fellowship at Harvard and his professorship at Duke University. Jay Z is also the subject of a class at Georgetown University.

See The Cultural Impact of Kanye West’s full synopsis below (via Consequence Of Sound):

The ability of popular art to offer societal critiques and challenge received ideas has been recognized throughout history. Through rap and hip hop, composers, singers, and entertainers have recently provided a voice questioning and challenging the sanctioned view of the times. This book offers an in-depth reading of the works and cultural impact of Kanye West. Looking at the moral and social implications of West’s words, images, and music in the broader context of Western civilization’s preconceived ideas, the contributors consider how West both challenges religious and moral norms and propagates them.
